NEWARK,, N.J., May 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. Postal Service has issued a set of 37-cent stamps honoring four 20th century choreographers who had a profound impact on American dance.

Ceremonies marking the first day of issue were held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, N.J.

The ceremonies were marked by performances in the style of the four honorees -- George Balanchine, Agnes de Miller, Alvin Ailey, and Martha Graham -- by the New York City Ballet, Ailey II Dance Company, and American Ballet Theater at the arts center's Victoria Theater.

The Ailey company also will give four performances at the center next weekend to celebrate its 45th anniversary season.

The stamps were designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Md.
