First seasonal theater awards announced

NEW YORK, May 5 (UPI) -- The Outer Critics Circle named the Pulitzer Prize-winning solo play "I Am My Own Wife," as best play on Broadway and "Wicked," as best Broadway musical.

The 75 members of the organization also voted "Intimate Apparel" as the best off-Broadway play and tied "Johnny Guitar" and "The Thing About Men" as the best off-Broadway musicals.

The Outer Critics circle is made up of out-of-town theater critics and its awards are the first of the 2003-2004 theater season.

They honored Lincoln Center's "Henry IV" as the outstanding revival of a play and Broadway's "Wonderful Town" as the outstanding revival of a musical.

The Circle voted acting honors to Eileen Atkins in "The Retreat from Moscow," Frank Langella in "Match," Donna Murphy in "Wonderful Town," and Hugh Jackman in "The Boy from Oz." Jack O'Brien won for best director of a play, "Henry IV," and Joe Mantello as best director of a musical, "Wicked."

The awards will be presented in ceremonies at Sardi's restaurant May 27.
