'Barbarian Invasions' wins again

TORONTO, May 1 (UPI) -- "Barbarian Invasions," already an Oscar-winner, triumphed Saturday at Canada's major awards ceremony.

The French-language film about a dying man coming to terms with life, his family and friends was awarded the Genie for best motion picture at a ceremony in Toronto. Its director, Denys Arcand, picked up two more Genies for best direction and best original screenplay.

The movie also won three acting Genies. Remy Girard was honored for his portrayal of a former college teacher with terminal cancer. Stephane Rousseau, as the son, and Marie-Josee Croze, who played a young drug addict who helps the dying man by giving him heroin, won in the supporting categories.

"The Barbarian Invasions" or "Les Invasions Barbares" was the first Canadian film to win an Oscar in the Foreign Language category.
