NEW YORK, April 23 (UPI) -- Major U.S. auction houses will offer collectors art, antiques and etcetera from the estates of actress Katherine Hepburn and heiress Doris Duke this spring.
Christie's will lead off June 2 with a five days of auctions for the benefit of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation that will include 150 jewels from the tobacco heiress' vast collection of antique and modern jewelry pieces, an "unsurpassed" collection of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne vintage wines, an eclectic collection of antique furnishings and decorative arts, and a select group of Impressionist and Modern art. Duke died in 1993 at the age of 80.
Sotheby's will follow with a two-day sale of Katharine Hepburn memorabilia starting June 10. It will include furniture, paintings, and decorations, a selection of clothing including her wedding dress, photographs documenting her career, artifacts gathered in her travels, the manuscript of her autobiography, and a few of her own paintings and sketches never before displayed. Hepburn died last year at 96.
