LONDON, April 19 (UPI) -- Actor Kevin Spacey has admitted the story he told British police about being mugged at a London park was untrue and he actually had been a scam victim.
Spacey, who was treated for a minor head injury after the incident early Saturday, apologized to Scotland Yard, saying he fell while chasing someone who stole his cell phone, The Times of London reported Monday.
"I fell for a con. And I was, I think, incredibly embarrassed by it," said Spacey, 44. "Some sob story about somebody needing to call their mother and could they use my phone ... And this kid took off and I was so upset I ran after him. ...
"I woke up after a couple of hours' sleep and I thought you know there is a difference between assault and theft and it just wasn't on for me to not come clean about my own level of embarrassment and being humble at the fact that I got taken by the oldest con going," he said.
