Most people won't turn off the TV

TROY, Mich., April 16 (UPI) -- Next week is National TV Turnoff Week, but most Americans will keep watching, indicates a survey by Michigan-based Entertainment Publications.

National TV Turnoff Week runs from April 19-25 and is intended to encourage people to watch less television and find what life offers beyond the tube.

Eighty-one percent of more than 400 respondents said they supported the concept of finding healthy alternatives to sedentary television viewing. But only 25 percent said it was "very likely" they would actually watch less television next week.

Ninety-five percent said they would like to participate in more "non-TV" activities like dining out or attending cultural and sports events, but the affordability of those activities was a big concern.

"We know the TV is on for an average of 7 hours and 40 minutes daily in the average U.S. home, so clearly people are using it as a major source of entertainment," said Karen Ruedisueli, director of marketing research.
