WASHINGTON, April 13 (UPI) -- Entertainer Dolly Parton has been tapped to receive the Living Legend Award, the U.S. Library of Congress's most prestigious honor.
Parton is set to pick up the award Wednesday in Washington, D.C., during a ceremony that also will include a concert by the veteran singer.
The library's curators and subject specialists select honorees from artists, writers, entertainers, activists, filmmakers, physicians, sport figures and public servants who have advanced or embodied the quintessentially American ideal of individual creativity, conviction, dedication and exuberance.
Previous recipients include musicians Ralph Stanley, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash; children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak; composer Steven Sondheim; filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese; folk singer Pete Seeger; chef Julia Child; broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite; surgeon Michael DeBakey; economist John Kenneth Galbraith; comedian Bob Hope; architect I.M. Pei; and baseball player Cal Ripkin Jr.
Cable's Great American Country plans to tape Wednesday's event for broadcast in May.
