LOS ANGELES, April 12 (UPI) -- Former "American Idol" contestant Nikki McKibbin says she doesn't like the way she has been treated since leaving the U.S. reality show.

"I was angry at first," she told TV Guide Online. "I was signed to a record deal the same day as Kelly, Justin and Tamyra -- I was sitting at the same table as they were -- but I was getting no press for it at all."

The 25-year-old singer said she walked away from her deal with RCA because the record label tried to turn her into a country singer, TV Guide Online noted.

"I felt like the fans who kept me on the show would not have followed me. They kept me around because I was a rocker," she said. "So, I figured it would be a huge disappointment to them if I sold out."

Even though she has no label now, McKibbin is hard at work on a rock album she likens to "Stevie Nicks and Pat Benatar meet techno."
