Paul McCartney plays surprise Tahoe gig

TRUCKEE, Nev., March 31 (UPI) -- Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney surprised guests -- and the band -- at a small Lake Tahoe, Nev., bar by singing a couple tunes with the local jazz trio.

McCartney sat in with George Souza's combo Monday at Moody's Bistro and Lounge in downtown Truckee, Nev., a surprise performance that Souza had been asked to keep secret for several months from even his band members, The Union of Grass Valley, Calif., reported Wednesday.

McCartney's gig actually was a repeat performance, as the famous musician played at Moody's on his Tahoe vacation last year, bar owner J.J. Morgan said.

When word came a few months ago that McCartney and wife Heather would return, Morgan told Souza to save the date but keep mum about the special guest.

"I wasn't nervous," Souza said. "Everyone wanted him to have a nice time and not be bugged. And he sounded great. Here's Paul McCartney standing next to you and he sounded amazing."
