Law: 'Alfie' nice break from dark roles

LONDON, March 31 (UPI) -- Jude Law says playing a modern-day playboy in a remake of the film "Alfie" was a nice change from all the dark characters he has recently portrayed.

"I was ready to relax," the British actor told Empire in the May issue of the magazine. "I'd done this batch of dark, spiritually searching roles. I was completely up to play a philanderer, a guy who is out for himself."

"What's it All About, Alfie?" is a remake of the 1966 film "Alfie," which earned Michael Caine his first Oscar nomination.

The new film has been updated by director Charles Shyer for a new generation.

"Alfie's blatantly honest about women," said Law of his character. "A great face, a great body, beautiful breasts -- that's what interests him. It's what a lot of men feel."

Law, who recently divorced wife Sadie Frost is best-known for his performances in "Cold Mountain," "The Talented Mr. Ripley," "Gattaca," "Enemy at the Gates," "Road to Perdition" and "AI: Artifical Intelligence."
