'Sesame Street' to launch in Japan

TOKYO, March 29 (UPI) -- Sesame Workshop announced in Tokyo Monday it will launch a Japanese adaptation of its long-running educational children's show "Sesame Street" in October.

The nonprofit organization said it formed a partnership with Japanese companies, called Sesame Street Partners Japan, to bring the series to Japanese TV and manage the Sesame Street brand in Japan.

Sesame Street Partners Japan will finance the new co-production and arrange for its broadcast. The consortium includes two advertising agencies -- ADK and Nikkeisha -- the licensing company WE'VE, TV Tokyo's broadband arm TX-BB and Odyssey Communications Inc., an education company that provides IT certification programs and English language training.

Plans call for two seasons of the show on TV Tokyo. Kevin Clash, the actor behind the show's popular Elmo character, has been in Tokyo for two weeks to audition, cast and train the first ever Japanese Muppeteers.
