LOS ANGELES, March 29 (UPI) -- Oscar-winning "Lord of the Rings" Director Peter Jackson has announced Jack Black and Naomi Watts will co-star in his upcoming remake of "King Kong."

Black is best-known for his performances in "The School of Rock" and "Shallow Hal," while Watts earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a grieving mother in last year's "21 Grams."

Black will play Carl Denham, an adventurer/filmmaker who is trying to make a name for himself in 1930s New York, The Hollywood Reporter said Monday. Watts will reportedly play Ann Darrow, an American stage actress.

Jackson will shoot the film in his native New Zealand, the trade paper noted.

"I've been wanting to work with Jack Black ever since I saw him in 'High Fidelity,'" said Jackson, who is penning the script with his "Lord of the Rings" partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

"He's a smart and versatile actor blessed with an abundance of energy and charm and I'm absolutely thrilled that he is joining us on 'Kong,'" Jackson said.
