LOS ANGELES, March 12 (UPI) -- "S.W.A.T.'s" Jeremy Renner will star in "Lords of Dogtown," a film based on the "Dogtown and Z-Boys" documentary about the 1970s U.S. skateboarding scene.

Renner will play a respected surf veteran and close friend of another lead character played by Heath Ledger, according to Friday's Hollywood Reporter.

The film is a fictionalized version of the documentary, which was based on a Spin magazine article about the California skateboarding culture. Stacy Peralta, who produced the original documentary, wrote the film's screenplay.

The story follows a group of young California surfers who take their style to the streets as skateboarders. Emile Hirsch, John Robinson, Victor Rasuk and Nikki Reed also star in the film.
