British Treasury may bail out films

LONDON, March 11 (UPI) -- Britain's Treasury may step in to help unfinished films starring the likes of Jude Law and Kate Winslet after the government closed a lucrative tax loophole.

Discussions are under way at the Treasury about how to help finance more than 20 films under production, which would take approximately $45 million, the Times of London reported Thursday.

Filming on more than 40 movies was shut down suddenly Feb. 10 when Britain's Inland Revenue outlawed film finance partnerships, which the government office suspected were a vehicle for tax evasion.

When public outcry charged that good films as well as bad ones had been affected, the Treasury decided to review each film to determine its worthiness for financial assistance.

"Tulip Fever" starring Jude Law, "The Constant Gardener" starring Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet, and "The Golden Man," based on the life of Christopher Marlowe, are said to be among the films being considered for monetary aid.
