New York man guilty in Lil' Kim scam

NEW YORK, March 9 (UPI) -- A man trying to extort $25,000 from Lil' Kim after falsely claiming to have the U.S. hip hop diva's stolen gems has plead guilty to attempted grand larceny.

John Acheson, 31, of Westchester, N.Y., has been sentenced in Queens to time served for attempting to scam Kim by offering to sell back the singer's $250,000 worth of jewelry, which was stolen June 20 from the singer's luggage at New York's Kennedy Airport, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

Acheson, who faced up to four years in prison for his crime, received leniency because he was a "petty scamster and an opportunist with no link to the jewelry theft," said a source close to the case.

Authorities are still looking for the person who took the jewels from Kim's luggage, which had been checked on a United Airlines flight.
