LOS ANGELES, March 9 (UPI) -- Oscar-nominated actor Paul Winfield, known for his versatile TV, film and stage roles, has died in Los Angeles from a heart attack. He was 62.
Winfield, who died Sunday, may be best known for his 1972 role as the father in "Sounder," for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and for his Emmy-nominated portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in a 1978 television film, the New York Times reported Tuesday.
Winfield's early acting work included being cast as Diahann Carroll's husband in the 1968 TV sitcom, "Julia," and then winning his first film role in 1969 in "The Lost Man."
Among his many roles, Winfield also appeared in the Broadway play "Checkmates" with Denzel Washington, portrayed Don King in a 1995 HBO movie and played the adoptive father of two Vietnamese children in the feature film, "Catfish in Black Bean Sauce," in 1999.
Winfield is survived by his sister, Patricia Wilson, of Las Vegas.
