BEIJING, March 3 (UPI) -- Karaoke club owners in China are accused of copyright infringement for using songs without permission.
Nearly 50 music companies -- from China and from the United States -- have hired lawyers in Beijing to seek damages from the karaoke bars, the official Xinhua news agency said.
"Because your company used the musical works of the complainants without permission, we demand your company stop infringing on their copyright and pay damages," Xinhua quoted the lawyers' letter as saying.
Thousands of letters were sent out to karaoke bars.
Few karaoke club owners have paid royalties for using the songs, Jianhong, of China's recording industry association, told Xinhua.
The music companies that enlisted the lawyers' help include EMI, Sony, Time Warner and Universal.
