Dancer to head American Ballet Theater

NEW YORK, March 1 (UPI) -- Rachel S. Moore, a former dancer with the American Ballet Theater Monday became the fourth new executive director of the company in four years.

Moore, who danced with the company from 1984 to 1988, was chosen last week by ABT's board of directors to succeed Elizabeth Harpel Kehler who resigned in June after less than a year in the job. Kehler had succeeded Wallace Chappell, who served less than two years after succeeding Louis G. Spisto, who was forced to resign in 2001.

Moore takes the reigns at the financially troubled ABT just as the company announced three new corporate sponsors and a challenge grant of $400,000. The company's auditor and management officials now claim the company is in good financial state.

Moore served as interim leader of the Boston Ballet during a similar turbulent financial period. She has held administrative posts at Project Step, a music school for minority students in Boston, the Ballet Theater of Boston, and art organizations including Americans for the Arts and the National Cultural Alliance. She also has taught at Boston University's graduate program in arts administration.
