NBC to air new tapes of Diana's turmoil

LONDON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- New video and audiotapes of Princess Diana candidly discussing her suicide attempts and tumultuous marriage will air on a U.S. TV special next week.

"Princess Diana: The Secret Tapes," airing Thursday on NBC, will feature new material, recorded between September 1992 and December 1993 from audio tapes of Diana's interviews with biographer Andrew Morton and video footage from the British princess' former voice coach Peter Settelen, London's Sun reported Friday.

Diana, who divorced Prince Charles and was killed in a 1997 Paris car crash, said on the tapes she never believed she would be queen.

"(Prince Charles) said, 'You do realize that one day you will be queen?' and a voice said to me inside, 'You won't be queen but you'll have a tough role,'" Diana said.

The princess also talked of her suicide attempts.

"I threw myself down the stairs when I was four months pregnant with William, trying to get my husband's attention to listen to me," she said. "But he just said, 'You're crying wolf.'"
