Reality TV star to star in Toronto musical

TORONTO, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Former "American Idol" contestant Vanessa Olivarez is set to play Tracy Turnblad in the Canadian production of the musical, "Hairspray," in Toronto.

Rehearsals for the show, with Olivarez as its bubbly leading lady, begin Feb. 23, Playbill Online reported Tuesday.

The 22-year-old singer/actress went from working as a colorist at an Atlanta hair salon to competing as a finalist on the U.S. reality series, "American Idol."

Performances at the Princess of Wales Theatre begin April 8 with an official opening planned for May 5.
