Depp, Theron, 'Rings' take top SAG Awards

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Johnny Depp, Charlize Theron and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" won top film honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles Sunday.

Depp won for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." The result was something a surprise, since most observers expected either Sean Penn ("Mystic River") or Ben Kingsley ("House of Sand and Fog") to win. All three are nominated for the Best Actor Oscar.

Thereon had been expected to win the Actor -- the name SAG has given to its statuette -- for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for "Monster." She is widely regarded as the favorite for the Best Actress Oscar.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" won for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, the SAG rough equivalent of a best picture trophy. The third installment of writer-director Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic literary series is a heavy favorite to win the Best Picture Oscar.
