Whedon heart-broken over 'Angel' demise

Feb. 16, 2004 at 2:54 PM

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Joss Whedon, the creator of "Angel," is "heart-broken" over the WB's decision to cancel his vampire drama, Variety has reported.

Whedon said he understands the decision not to renew the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spin-off due to budget concerns, but lamented: "I thought that if a show was really good and doing really well (in the ratings), it was renewed... I was apparently misinformed."

Whedon went on to say he thought the network was making a mistake by dropping the critically acclaimed series.

"I do understand the business of it," he said. "But to me, when they're scrambling to hold on to their audience, their revenue, their dignity, it doesn't seem the best decision. And it's certainly not the classiest. If there's no place for quality in the equation, I don't know why we're here."

Whedon said the show's cast and crew were "stunned" when he told them the news Friday.

"Nobody saw this coming," he said.
