Miramax cancels Oscar bash

NEW YORK, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Miramax has canceled its traditional Oscar bash after none of its films earned a best-picture nomination this year, the New York Post reported Monday.

Studio boss Harvey Weinstein was reportedly furious because Miramax's Civil War epic "Cold Mountain" was overlooked for the best film honor. Leading lady Nicole Kidman also failed to get a mention for her performance in the film, although her co-stars Jude Law and Renee Zellweger were both nominated for acting prizes.

Miramax has scooped up numerous Oscars and dozens of nominations during the past decade. Last year, it produced two best-picture contenders: "Gangs of New York" and "Chicago," and co-produced a third film with Paramount, "The Hours."

It took home the top honor for "Chicago," a film that also earned a best-supporting prize for Catherine Zeta-Jones. Nicole Kidman was named best actress for her performance in "The Hours."

The Post quoted a Miramax spokesperson insisting the studio's "pre-party" will go on as planned and only its "post-party" was nixed.
