TULSA, Okla., Feb. 16 (UPI) -- A University of Oklahoma film student has created and posted on the Internet a fake two-minute trailer for "The Hobbit."
Steve Latham combined footage from "The Fellowship of the Ring," the first film from Peter Jackson's trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic, and the 1981 fantasy film "Dragonslayer" for the fictitious movie trailer.
The trailer can be viewed at lathamfilms.com, the Web site for the aspiring 26-year-old film editor.
In his ruse, Latham even has predicted a release date for the film: Dec. 16, 2006.
All of Latham's work may be wishful thinking. While rumors abound, nothing is set about the making of the popular prequel.
The reality is that even if Jackson directs "The Hobbit," production could not begin until after the "Lord of the Rings" director finishes his current project, "King Kong," which is set for a late 2005 release.
Also, the rights for the film are involved in complex legal wrangling, the Alameda, Calif., Times-Star reported, with New Line owning production rights and MGM/United Artists owning distribution rights.
