LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- After years of rumors, writers have started developing a script for a feature-length "Simpsons" film, though the U.S. release date could still be years away.
Fox's feature film animation division is "in the very early stages of developing an idea for the movie," said Fox executive Chris Meledandri in the Daily Variety.
At least seven veteran "Simpsons" writers, including creator Matt Groening and executive producers James L. Brooks and Al Jean, are working on the script.
Producer Mike Reiss, who also is on the writing team, said during an interview at DVDFanantic.com that the film may be released in summer or Christmas 2006.
"It's a reality after being just sort of this phantom idea," Reiss said at the Web site. "I think it is really gonna happen."
After 15 years, "The Simpsons" is the top-rated weekly scripted show on Fox, averaging 12.9 million viewers per episode.
Fox has wanted to do a "Simpsons" movie for a long time, Reiss said.
"We never had the greatest idea that was compelling, but Fox said, 'Maybe if we start paying you, you'll get inspired,' he said. "And sure enough it worked!"
