LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Kathy Bates has agreed to lend her voice to the character of Sea Hag/Siren in an upcoming "Popeye" television special, Daily Variety reported Thursday.
"To get an Oscar winner like Kathy Bates is a big coup for us," King Features president Rocky Shepard said of the "Misery" and "About Schmidt" star. "The delays we had in production ended up helping us produce the best team possible."
"Popeye's Voyage: The Quest for Pappy," a computer-generated, 30-minute adventure featuring the spinach-munching sailor and his pals, is set to debut on Fox at the end of the year.
Written by Paul Reiser and Jim Hardison, the special will feature a new version of the "Popeye the Sailor Man" theme song by Devo alum Mark Mothersbaugh.
Billy West, of "Ren and Stimpy" fame, will supply the voice of Popeye.
King Features Syndicate is overseeing the re-launch of the Popeye franchise in honor of the character's 75th anniversary.
