Notre Dame to host 'Queer Film Festival'

SOUTH BEND, Ind., Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A "Queer Film Festival" is being planned at the University of Notre Damein Indiana, the Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

Last year, the Princeton Review's annual survey of American colleges ranked Notre Dame as the most unfriendly to homosexuals.

Calling the festival a much-needed "breakthrough," student Richard Friedman complained, "The university's administration had even barred gay groups from advertising in the student newspaper."

Sister Mary Louise Gude, assistant vice president for student affairs, said Catholic teaching forbids the school to officially recognize a gay group.

The nun is, however, permitted to chair a Committee on Gay and Lesbian Needs because the university distinguishes between forbidden homosexual activity and people who happen to be homosexual.

Not all students are in favor of the gay-themed film festival, however.

Christopher Brophy, publisher of the school's conservative student newspaper, declared, "We don't feel it is appropriate at a Catholic school to promote viewing of movies that show inappropriate behavior."
