Film version of 'The Simpsons' planned

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A big-screen treatment of "The Simpsons," television's long-running animated series, is now in the works, Sky News reported Wednesday.

"Simpsons" creators Matt Groening and James L. Brooks are leading a team of writers in developing an animated movie.

Industry insiders said "Simpsons" scribes Al Jean, Mike Scully, Mike Reiss, David Mirkin and George Meyer are all on board and work has already begun on the script.

A plot line has not yet fully formed, however.

Chris Meledandri, 20th Century Fox's animation chief, described the team as "very excited" about bringing the funny-looking folks from Springfield to the big screen, but cautioned the project was only in the "very early stages of developing an idea for the movie."

No release date for the movie has been set, but insiders predict it won't be for at least two years.
