Hollywood stars dress up Berlin Film Fest

BERLIN, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Renee Zellweger, Jack Nicholson and Charlize Theron were among the Hollywood celebrities adding star power over the weekend to the Berlin Film Festival.

Four days into what had been a lackluster beginning for one of the industry's most important events, A-list actors began showing up, giving the Berlin Film Festival a much-needed boost, according to Monday's Hollywood Reporter.

Even with eccentric interviews by Nicholson and co-star Diane Keaton from "Something's Gotta Give" and Theron from "Monster" receiving raves for her anti-death penalty stance, the attention fell on two small films.

Festival attendees were abuzz about Hans Petter Moland's "The Beautiful Country," about a young Vietnamese man who leaves his country to find the American father he never knew, and Vinko Bresan's "Witnesses," about a murder during the Yugoslavian civil war.

"We wanted to make a film that was beautiful, and not just pretty. We didn't want to glorify anything," Moland said. "We're not really qualified to tell this story."

The film will be released in the United States by Sony Classics.

Nick Nolte, who has a key cameo in the film, canceled his Berlin visit at the last minute; co-star Tim Roth did make an appearance.
