Freeman realizes dream of flying

WAIKIKI, Hawaii, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Actor Morgan Freeman told reporters in Waikiki he learned to fly during breaks in filming his new comedy "The Big Bounce."

"I flew while I was here. I was a student pilot trying to get my instrument rating, so I went to flight school in Hawaii and worked with a really terrific guy there," the 66-year-old actor said. "And I now how have my instrument rating."

Asked if flying planes was a life-long dream, Freeman, replied: "I started out in high school, I wanted to fly. By 16, I was flying my desk up to 18,000 feet... while my teacher was drawing on the blackboard."

After he graduated high school Freeman said he considered being a fighter pilot, but quit because he didn't want to be a "killer."

"I wanted the cameras," he laughed. "So, I gave up the idea of flying until very recently. (I was into sailing,) you're still riding the wind and so I thought I'd made a good substitute until I actually started flying and it's different."
