Jackson kept away from Grammys

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- CBS and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences say Janet Jackson's appearance during the Grammy awards telecast next Sunday has been canceled.

And the television network announced plans Tuesday to air the ceremony on a video-delayed basis.

Daily Variety said the actions are designed to make sure there will be no incidents similar to the one that ended the halftime Super Bowl festivities Sunday evening. In that incident, singer Justin Timberlake ripped off part of Jackson's costume, exposing her right breast.

WKYT-TV General Manager Wayne Martin in Lexington, Ky., said he requested CBS use a tape delay for the Grammys and CBS agreed. The network said the procedure would allow for the elimination of any inappropriate audio or video

Daily Variety said it learned the awards will be aired on a five-minute video-delayed basis, with both video and audio subjected to censoring should any foul language be used or performers engage in any other behavior deemed controversial.

It was still unclear whether Timberlake would perform during the Grammy awards telecast.
