Jackson: 'Rings' films not just spectacle

NEW YORK, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Peter Jackson wants people to appreciate the stories and performances as much as the spectacular visuals in his "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

"We're trying to take our lead from (author J.R.R) Tolkien," Jackson told reporters in New York. "I think the books are great because they have this wonderful mixture of epic spectacles and vistas with an intimate story line. There's a lot of ability in 'Lord of the Rings' to have character depth and emotion, which we try to do as much

as the spectacle side of it. I think that combination worked well in the books and we're trying to replicate that in the films."

"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," the final installment of the trilogy, was nominated earlier this week for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and best director. The epic was shut out of all acting categories, however.
