Exit polls: Kerry squeaks in, Dean surges

MANCHESTER, N.H., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- New Hampshire exit polls showed John Kerry winning Tuesday evening but a resurgent Howard Dean breathing down his neck, campaign sources said.

Exit polls show Sen. Kerry. of Massachusetts, holding on to his lead at 34 percent, the sources said, but former Vermont Gov. Dean was back in the race with 31 percent.

Earlier, Dean staffers had privately said anything above 30 percent would be a huge triumph for their candidate, whom pundits pronounced dead in the water after placing third in the Iowa caucus last week.

The exit polls showed Sen. John Edwards, of North Carolina, far behind the first two with 12 percent, but retired Gen. Wesley Clark was fourth with 9 percent. Sen. Joe Lieberman, of Connecticut, was fifth, according to the exit polls
