Crew set to re-create Steinbeck's voyage

MONTEREY, Calif., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- A crew is preparing to set sail from Northern California to re-create John Steinbeck's Baja California voyage, as told in "The Log from the Sea of Cortez."

On March 11, a crew plans to leave Monterey, following the exact 4,000-mile route to the Sea of Cortes outlined in Steinbeck's writings, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

In 1940, after writing "The Grapes of Wrath," Steinbeck and his friend, Edward F. Ricketts, set sail from Monterey for a six-week journey around the Baja California peninsula. During the journey, Ricketts gathered more than 550 marine samples while Steinbeck kept a diary of the expedition.

In the 21st century version of the trip, scientists will gather samples to compare with Ricketts' observations and a free-lance writer will chronicle the account for a book, as well as a daily Web log on the Internet for school children and others to follow.
