NEW YORK, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Patricia Heaton said in New York Friday she doesn't know if her hit sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond" will return next fall.

The actress who plays Raymond Barone's wife Debra on the show revealed on "Live with Regis and Kelly" that the fate of the series will be announced in "the next few weeks."

Asked who is making the decision about whether the show will be back for a ninth season, Heaton said, "Ray," referring to her co-star and the series' creator, writer and executive producer Ray Romano.

"It could go either way, but one more year would be nice," Heaton said, admitting, "I started my hassling campaign (to stay on the air) about two years ago."

Heaton said Romano was concerned about maintaining the family show's quality.

The actress can also be seen in the TNT movie "Neil Simon's The Goodbye Girl" on Friday.
