U.S. films prominent at Berlin Film Fest

BERLIN, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- The United States provides a strong list of contenders at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival, including "Cold Mountain," which is set to open the 10-day event.

North American movies, including Norman Jewison's "The Statement," Vadim Perelman's "The House of Sand and Fog," Richard Linklater's untitled sequel to "Before Sunrise," Patty Jenkins' "Monster" and Hans Petter Moland's "Beautiful Country," are on the roster for Germany's top film event, Daily Variety reported Thursday.

Set to run Feb. 5-15, other films selected for viewings include John Boorman's South African-set drama "Country of My Skull" and Ken Loach's Scottish movie "Ae Fond Kiss."

Traditionally, the festival features a heavy lineup of Oscar contenders. Given the Academy Awards' earlier date of Feb. 29 this year, however, has meant that fewer films were available.
