Astin enjoying star status with 'Rings'

NEW YORK, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Sean Astin has worked steadily in film for more than 20 years, but it was "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy that made him a star.

So, how does it feel to be seen as an "overnight success" when you've been acting since 9 years old?

"To me, it's about looking ahead, not about savoring this moment," the 32-year-old "Rudy" and "The Goonies" star told UPI's Karen Butler in New York.

"I don't know if everything happens for a reason or not, but if you lean forward into that idea, it's amazing how much more fun the world becomes. You stop wondering and regretting and fearing and start living and creating and enjoying," explained the actor who plays Samwise Gamgee in the Tolkien films.

Admitting he is still trying to figure out how good reviews and awards translate into work opportunities, Astin said he is also striving to be worthy of people's high expectations.

"Right now, I can see exactly what this moment is and what it's supposed to be and how I'm suppose to (make my next move...,)" he said. "I'm all about rolling up my sleeves and doing the work."
