LOS ANGELES, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Hit HBO drama "The Sopranos" will kick off its final season with the end of many of the mobsters' prison terms, the show's creator said Thursday in Los Angeles.
"The show begins with what we call the Mafia Class of 2004 hitting the streets," David Chase told reporters Thursday at the Television Critics Association media tour.
Chase said he got the idea after reading an article in the Newark Star-Ledger about the highly publicized RICO cases of the '80s, which put away a lot of mobsters who have now served their time.
HBO plans to air the usual 13 episodes this season, debuting March 7. The sixth season, which Chase said will be the last, will have only 10 episodes.
The reason fans are getting that sixth season, Chase said, is that when he tried to think about the "final act of the show," he realized that he wanted to cover too much to accomplish everything in a fifth season.
