Jackson was nominated for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," the third and final installment of his trilogy. Also nominated were Sofia Coppola for her comedy "Lost in Translation," Clint Eastwood for "Mystic River," Gary Ross for "Seabiscuit" and Peter Weir for his epic "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World."

Apted congratulated all the nominees.

"A director has the responsibilities of shaping a story, creating a visual language, and bringing all elements of the filmmaking process together," he noted. "These five individuals and their films clearly demonstrate how a director's skill, when combined with vision, can create excellence in filmmaking."

The winner will be named at the 56th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Feb. 7 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
