Death of Righteous Brother cocaine-related

KALAMAZOO, Mich., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- An autopsy report shows Righteous Brothers singer Bobby Hatfield died Nov. 5 from a heart attack related to cocaine abuse, a media report said Tuesday.

Hatfield, 63, who died just hours before playing a show at the Miller Auditorium in Kalamazoo, Mich., died from acute cocaine intoxication, according to an autopsy report released Monday.

The Righteous Brothers, a veteran R&B band, is known for its harmonizing on such hits as "Unchained Melody" and "You've Lost That Loving Feeling."

The initial autopsy performed on Hatfield found advanced coronary disease resulting in a heart attack, which was listed on the singer's death certificate, the local Kalamazoo Gazette reported.

The follow-up toxicology reports, however, found "it was the level of cocaine that really was the cause of death," said Dr. Richard Tooker, chief medical examiner for Kalamazoo County.

Tooker's office received the report of acute cocaine intoxication on Dec. 24. But, "to be respectful" of Hatfield's wife, Linda, Tooker asked that the cause of death be held until after the holidays.

An amended death certificate will be filed with Michigan's state office of vital records.
