LOS ANGELES, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Autopsy results following the death of Elliott Smith were unclear as to whether the musician committed suicide in Los Angeles, MTV.com reported Wednesday.

At the time of Smith's death on Oct. 21, there was speculation that Smith, who suffered from depression, had killed himself.

An L.A. coroner's examination of Smith's body, the findings of which were released Tuesday, were inconclusie as to whether the two penetrating stab wounds that killed him were self-inflicted or the result of foul play, the report said.

The exam also found that no illegal drugs were in Smith's body at the time of his death. Non-abusive amounts of medications for depression and attention-deficit disorder were present.

Smith released five albums between 1994 and 2000, and was nominated for an Oscar in 1997 for his song "Miss Misery," from the film "Good Will Hunting." He was almost finished with his sixth album, tentatively titled "From a Basement on a Hill," at the time of his death.

The Los Angeles Police Department will continue its investigation.
