STAMFORD, Conn., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Actor Earl Hindman, best known as Tim Allen's neighbor "Wilson" on the show "Home Improvement," died Monday at a Stamford, Conn., hospital.
Hindman had cancer, the Stamford (Conn.) Advocate reported Tuesday. He was 61.
The longtime Stamford native had a 30-year career that included acting on Broadway, in films and as Lt. Bob Reed for 14 years on the ABC soap opera "Ryan's Hope."
His most notable role, however, involved his voice more than his face. As "Wilson" on the popular sitcom "Home Improvement," Hindman spent eight years offering worldly, fatherly and marital advice to "Tim Taylor," played by comedian Tim Allen, while hidden behind the adjoining backyard fence.
"Earl had a very deep voice. It was very rich, very warm and very recognizable," said Hindman's wife, Molly McGreevy.
Most recently, Hindman performed in "Julius Caesar" at the Theatre for a New Audience in New York City. His performance won him the Actor's Equity Callaway Prize for best performance in a professional production of a classic play. The award was to be presented Jan. 9.
