LONDON, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Rocker Pete Townshend contemplated suicide after news broke of his arrest for downloading child pornography, The Observer reported Sunday.

"If I had had a gun, I would have shot myself," Townshend, 57, said.

It would have been the worst possible solution, however, because "it would have confirmed what everybody thought," he added.

Townshend, a registered sex offender because of the arrest, said despite what people may think, he is not a pedophile.

The Who's guitarist was arrested last January during an international investigation into child pornography on the Internet.

He confessed to once using a credit card to download $5 worth of child porn.

"I know that I caused the most incredible chaos by that one single neglectful careless act ... for my ex-wife, for my son who's only 13, for his school friends, for my girlfriend, all of whom had to make a snap decision whether to swing behind me or not," he said. "And they all did."
