Brooklyn Museum to build feminist center

NEW YORK, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The Brooklyn Museum announced Wednesday it will create an 8,300-square-foot center for feminist art.

Arnold L. Lehman, director of the museum, issued a statement saying the center will be named for Elizabeth L. Sackler, a Brooklyn Museum trustee who has made a five-year commitment to finance the center. He declined to say how much money has been committed to the project but said it would cover the creation of exhibition galleries, a study area, and a space for public programs.

The centerpiece of the center will be the museum's recently acquired "Dinner Party," a display piece by Judy Chicago that is composed of a 48-foot triangular dinner table set with 39 places, each commemorating an important woman in world history. The work generated considerable controversy some years ago due to its references to female sexual organs.

"This gives us an opportunity to talk to another audience, both young and old, in important ways," Lehman said.
