Rev. Schuller raps Hefner ads

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A well-known televangelist is criticizing the Carl's Jr. fast food chain for a TV ad featuring Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Rev. Robert H. Schuller -- best-known for the weekly "Hour of Power" TV show that originates from his Crystal Cathedral in Southern California -- offered his critique of the ad in the sermon he taped for this Sunday's telecast.

In a series of Carl's Jr. ad, Hefner delivers a pitch for the restaurant chain's "Six Dollar " hamburgers -- a collection of five different burgers intended to entice customers who want a little variety in their fast-food diet. The ads feature the 77-year-old Hefner with several younger women, suggesting that playing the field with burgers is roughly equivalent to playing the field with partners.

The overall theme of the ad campaign is summed up in a tagline that reads: "Because some guys don't like the same thing night after night."

"I have never been so appalled, hurt, wounded, embarrassed and I cannot let it pass," said Schuller in his sermon.

Carl's Jr. acknowledged that the Hefner ads have provoked hundreds of complaints since they went on the air last month.
