HBO may telecast Tony Kushner's new play

NEW YORK, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- HBO may film Tony Kushner's new Off-Broadway chamber opera in the wake of its successful TV production of his prize-winning epic drama, "Angels in America."

A source at the channel confirmed that negotiations with the playwright have begun for filming "Caroline, or Change" for future broadcast. The show, which is completely sung to music by Jeanine Tesori, opened Nov. 31 at the Public Theater to impressive reviews and there is talk of transferring it to Broadway.

"Caroline" deals with racial relations in a Louisiana town in 1963 and was inspired by the playwright's experiences as a child of a Jewish family with a black maid-of-all-work, an uncompromising woman who finds herself playing mother to a motherless white boy. The action is set against a background of President John F. Kennedy's assassination and the growing civil rights movement.

The second installment of Kushner's Pulitzer-Prize winning "Angels in America" is scheduled for Sunday.
