BURBANK, Calif., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Next Wednesday's centennial of the Wright Brothers' first flight will include the renaming of California's Burbank Airport for legendary entertainer Bob Hope.
The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday that the plan to rename the facility Bob Hope Airport has won approval of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority and governing bodies of all three cities.
Airport spokesman Victor J. Gill told the paper there was "some symmetry" between Hope's life and the history of manned flight. Hope was born on May 29, 1903, just seven months before Orville Wright first flew at Kitty Hawk on Dec. 17, 1903.
Hope, who died on July 27, had maintained a private jet at Burbank Airport, not far from his home in Toluca Lake.
A spokesman for the Hope family, Michael Hastings, told the Times the family was humbled at the news that the airport would be named for Hope. Hastings described the family's reaction as "a dead silence out of just pure humility and pride."
Local officials and members of the Hope family are expected to be on hand for the renaming ceremony at 10 a.m. next Wednesday.
