NEW YORK, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- After acclaimed performances in "Girl With a Pearl Earring" and "Lost in Translation," Scarlett Johansson will lead in a new adaptation of an Oscar Wilde play.
Johansson is now filming "A Good Woman," Mike Barker's version of Wilde's famous "Lady Windermere's Fan." Describing the piece as character-driven with "things actually happening," the 19-year-old New Yorker assures the film will be anything but a stuffy Victorian gabfest.
"It's fun. It's set in the 1930s ... and it's beautiful," Johansson told UPI in a recent interview.
Asked if "Pearl" co-star Colin Firth (who starred in the 2002 film "The Importance of Being Earnest") offered her tips on starring in a Wilde work, Johansson said he warned her that adapting Wilde's dialogue and repeating the great wit's paradoxical quotes can be difficult to bring to the big screen.
"But, we've got a great script," Johansson continued. "This film is proving quite easy to adapt, actually."
Tom Wilkinson ("Girl With a Pearl Earring" and "The Importance of Being Earnest") and Helen Hunt ("As Good as it Gets") co-star.
