Gay group hails victory over reggae star

LONDON, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Gay rights activists Saturday took credit for the cancellation of concerts by Jamaica's Bounty Killer in Birmingham and London.

The group, OutRage!, asked Scotland Yard's hate crime unit to investigate homophobic lyrics in songs by the reggae singer.

Learning of the cancellations, OutRage! spokesman Peter Tatchell told the BBC the singer "dared not show his face."

"This is a fantastic victory over homophobia," he said.

Management for Bounty Hunter, whose real name is Rodney Price, told the BBC he merely missed his plane and the concerts would be rescheduled.

Tatchell has called for Price to be arrested on charges of inciting the assault and murder of gay people, and/or on charges of causing harassment, alarm and distress, the BBC said.

Four Bounty Killer songs urge gay people be burned, drowned, wiped out, stoned and murdered, Tatchell said.

Tatchell said people have the right to criticize homosexuality, but cannot "encourage queer-bashing violence and murder."
