NEW YORK, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- The man who popularized the mambo 50 years ago, is facing eviction from his New York City apartment.
Eighty-two-year-old Horacio Riambau told the New York Post he was being threatened with eviction from his one-bedroom upper west side apartment he's had since 1966 because he pays only $125 a month in rent.
Riambau said his landlord told him directly he wanted him out of the apartment because of the low rent.
A spokeswoman for the landlord, J&R Kalimian Trust, denied Riambau was being evicted.
The spokeswoman told the Post, Riambau needed to remove his property and vacate the property because repairs needed to be made following a fire in the apartment last September.
Riambau was called in the "Papa of the Mambo" after performing the dance at exhibitions at Carnegie Hall and the Palladium in New York City in the 1950s.
